larry fink is often set to be on the periphery, major democratic supporter of president obama during his first term. he's said to be kind of like on a short list. we should point out that larry hasn't been called yet. the president seems to be siding with lew. things could change. fiscal cliff could be a big thing. lori: tell us more about the character of jack lew. we foe he's -- we know he's a tough negotiator -- >> he's the chief of staff right now. um, you know, he spent some time at citigroup, i know that. he's considered -- he was brought in to citigroup by, i believe, bob rubin, spent time in the clinton administration. people describe him as a pretty partisan guy. he's much more liberal than geithner, although geithner is a guy whether he's liberal or not personally carried the president's water pretty well. you know, i'm not saying he did a good job, i'm just saying he did not deviate from the president's line. you know, it's interesting. guys like bob rubin when they were treasury secretary, he basically went up against the president. if you read some of bob woodward's book

issue going forward and all we have now is a bunch of political posturing by john boehner and barack obama with the press. as we look at the market the market is holding up relatively well after a 4% rally and if you think of that we are still on the year and the market continues to go higher so i don't see any reason to believe there's not a deal in place. liz: is the fear of missing the rally now almost equal to the fear of getting crushed by the risk? >> i tell you what. anybody that has fear about missing the rally is a little misguided because all it takes is money to buy stocks and i would rather be late than right and early and wrong. >> i could not agree more. by high and sell high. you are not going to be the guy who buys it. liz: i caught the ball, you know. thank you so much for joining us on the floor show. a whole host of state leaders were at the white house talking to the president stressing the importance of getting a debt deal done before the end of the year. if the u.s. goes off of the fiscal cliff, their budgets, each of the state you live in would run amok especially th

president obama says this afternoon the progress is being made, but there is still plenty of work to be done but the stocks right now. very close to session highs, up 137 points. the nasdaq better by 58. the s&p 500 up one and a half points to low 20 points. not bad at all. the market started ticking off a little after noon when investors get worried that the president was going to speak at 130. in a tape that is pretty soon to begin, very few volumes speculated, it will to push the market higher. here you go. the dow had its intraday high of 30 minutes before the president spoke. right now of 131 points. the market moving mostly to the upside. the blue chips, hewlett-packard up above four 1/4%. $14.26 per share, but down about 45% for the year. economy names like caterpillar in the green, up three in the third. a similar story for ge up to one 1/4. so these are widely held stocks that could be in your portfolio. your pension fund doing very nicely on this last trading day. there is a school of thought that no matter what happens in the debt deal negotiations gold is the ultimate win
